Segmented Bubinga Bowl

This almost was a a hollow form.

I had this piece vacuum chucked on a lathe when we had a power outage. You can guess what happen next.

This sat on one of my work benches for a while until I figured out how to remount it.

By the time I got around to working on it again the form moved just enough to make it even more difficult so I decided with a little sanding I could make a bowl out of it.

It measures about 4.25" high by about 6.5" wide.
Bubinga, ebony and maple burl.

Well it turned out really well, I like the way the wood goes together, mama said it looks like a basketball, but she liked it too, that means alot coming from one who see's through me instead of at me most of the time. Wink

Actually, I usually do not like segmented turnings (too fussy), but the combination of woods, and the the shape of the segments could almost make me want to try one. Beautiful piece.

I have to agree with you grey, most segmented turning looks to busy to me.

I think many turner's goal is to see how many pieces they can glue up. Along the way they forget all about form.

This one has (not counting the veneer strips) 37 pieces.
