What everyone else said about the looks and more. Also a great job of lining up the grain on the lid and bottom when the lid is on. I like the grain pattern in the wood as well. Nice shine to the finish. What did you use?
Ron, this is a wonderful little piece. The chased threads are a real plus. I'm sure Mike is going to love it. I don't comment over there any longer so I'm real glad you posted it here. I hope you'll share a bit more about the threads.
Folks, take special notice at how the grain lines up. One of the marks of a true craftsman. 8-)
To answer a couple of questions. Yes I made my own hand chasers and I believe (hoping is a better word) I developed a different way of chasing threads that goes with these tools. I went through 4 revisions so far and I plan making one more simple change and the hardware should be ready. These tools are different than any chaser already on the market.
The technique is simple enough for anyone who already knows how to make a box to be successful on the second or third try. This box is really the first box I made with threads. I did do two practice runs on some scrap and was convinced after the second try that I was ready to do it for real. I made a few more threaded boxes as I improved on the tools.
I'm trying to decide which direction I want to go. Woodturning Design expressed an interest in a article. I'm also considering joining the bandwagon and marketing the tools myself. I shouldn't do both, it needs to be one or the other.
The finish is, as always, Waterlox.
To follow up on what The Rev mentioned, I had sent this box to Mike Stanford a few weeks ago and I never had picture of it. So when he posted an image on the other forum, I was able to post it here.
Thanks Ron. I look forward to seeing the tool in action. I may have to do some wood threading if it is what you say it is. I do know that they look good. And to top it off, Mike gave them a thumb's up. 8-)
Good luck with your decision on the threading tools. If you decice to sell and it works as well as you say then I'm sure there would be interest. You will have to do a video and demonstrate it! :-) I've wanted to try threads, but have been intiminated by the Sorby tool approach. "Other Forum", I didn't know there was one.
