Thanks everyone. I didn't mention that the top, is checked much like an old bird house roof would be. Apple loves to split and check. This was a crotch piece that had check pretty badly. I went ahead and turned it, allowing the checks to remain and some of the bark as well. the entrance hole was drilled where a natural hole existed.
