6 1/2" wide x 3" tall. Finish is 2 coats of Seal-a-Cell followed by 5 coats of Arm-r-Seal. Sanded between coats with 400 dipped in water. Seems to worked pretty well. Not flawless, but came out pretty nice for this piece. I don't care much for the shape myself. The intent was something a bit different, but it ended up like this. So it is what it is. Might sell it for something less than the normal. We'll see.
Hi Rev. A few months ago I made a bowl very like this one except it was about 5.5" deep. I wasn't satisfied with the shape and set it aside. A short while later my wife came into the shop and asked 'who is that bowl for?' When I said it was homeless she was delighted because it was exactly the size and shape she needed to put a plant pot into so, there's a home for everything.
That Osage Orange is lovely wood. I like the rim on this bowl but I can't work out if it is flat or convex because of the way the light hits the lower portion. I think it is flat with a crisp edge going into the bowl. Am I right?
You have a good eye, Brendan. It is slightly convex. A wise old turner told me long ago that he felt a turning should never have a flat surface. I've remembered that every since. There is however a sharp edge going into the bowl as well. Really helps the eye move into the bowl when looking from an upper angle. 8-)
Rev. Doug, I was told that too and I've tried to stick with it. Sometimes a straight line can be very effective but I find it hard to do, however, you have made a wonderful compromise here and I'm going to have to steal your design occasionally.
Go for it. I love the rim and the bowl, just not together. A wider rim may have suited be better. Don't know. I know a shallower bowl would have. But it is what it is now. It will be just what someone wants. Just have to search them out. 8-)
