Sweet little piece that is about 3x3.25. I had never turned sweet gum before. Came out pretty nice. About 1/8" thick. Finish is cut lacquer followed by tung oil finish. Stil needs to be buffed. Was not able to get a pic of the detail on the bottom. There are 3 v-grooves to set off the foot from the rest of the bowl. Really gives a nice detail in person.
Gil, an orts bowl? I don't know. Seems a bit big for that. But I guess it could be.
Jim, sweet gum is a native tree to this area. Most folks find them a pain. Obviously when it spalts it is beautiful. Pretty hard stuff. But, it work up very nicely.
Everyone, thanks for the comments. It has been a lot of fun to turn on this bigger lathe. Many moons ago, Chris was making a comment about moving up to a bigger, more powerful lathe. He said that it seems that your abilities go up with the increase. I still don't know if I completely agree with that statement, but one thing I can say is that you don't have to worry about the ability of your lathe as much. With the rotating headstock I really don't worry about the size of the blank. If it's anywhere close I just turn things out a bit and go to it. Power is without question now so I never stall it. Turning has always been fun, now I really love it. 8)
