Hi guys,
i turned the wet cherry block to a large wall thickness, then leave it 2 years dry. After drying i turned the final wall thickness about 15mm, sanded the inside to 400 grit, oiled the inside.
The carving on the outside i made with carving chisels, a rotary rasp mounted in a flexible shaft on a 25.000 rpm motor. Then the outside sanding began. I use an one-hand angle grinder with self made sanding arbors in all sizes suitable for the project. The Structure is carved with a carving chisel, then laquered with black acrylic dye, then sanded. So the valley of the carving stay black, and the mountains became cherry-color. Then oiled 6 times, and polished in three steps.
hope it helps

Bernie that is a fantastic piece! With all the work you put into it and the beautiful outcome I think it should be on a magazine cover! Congrats...Bill..
What a truly beautiful piece of art, it shows your attention to detail and dedication to this craft! The ebony is gorgeous and really stands out compared to the cherry.
