Russian Olive box with Wenge finial

This is my entry to the 2007 Lidded Box Challenge. It's a little under 3" diameter because I had to turn away a little bit of wood that was cracked. It has a Wenge finial and is finished with Deft lacquer.

Beautiful piece! The diagonal cut on the top of the finial is a wonderful detail.

Is Russian Olive a little grainier than regular Olive? Either way I like the box. I don't dare try wenge anymore, But you've done yourself proud with that finial.

Great job. I assume the join is on the top? The 3 rings on the side look just like the join area on top and disguises it nicely.

SkyJ, the texture in the finial is just the grain in the wenge. The photo makes it look a little more pronounced.
Rightuppercut, the only olive I've ever turned was pens but Russian olive isn't anything like that. Russian Olive is a soft, light weight, pourous wood and grows like a weed around Utah.
