I'll repost these on a white background after xmas. Actually I have done nothing to the wood on top of the left one. What you see is a natural edge on a piece of burl. Lots of crags and fissures etc. On the right one I dabbed on a wine-coloured dye in the natural fault area before I sprayed it with gloss lacquer.
