Walnut and maple. My first attempts at hollow forms even though I don't really have the right tools. I am not too happy with the proportions on this one, but it is better than my first try. I think the finial is too bulky to fit with the rest of the piece. Bowl is 4" across the flats and the piece is about 6 3/4" tall.
Very cool Bob This will go well in my collection! I like the octagons in the piece and I like the finial. My first thought was reminiscent of a chess piece, looks like you topped a regal looking box with the King.
Well done Bob. I like everything about it but the top of the finial. However, my wife absolutely loves the finial so it goes to show you that not everyone likes the same thing.
I agree with Chris. If you didn't have the base, then the finial might be too much. But the heft of the base and stem makes the finial just about perfect. 8)
bobham- the blue is UV from the shade you are using for a light source. Some digital cameras havs a color balance correction setting for shade, but the better reproducable light source is diffused daylight, or artificial with correct color balance setting to give accurate color of original.
The picture was taken outside in the shade in the early evening. My camera has "High color", "Natural Color", "Low Color", "Black & White", and "Sepia". I have been using the "Natural Color" setting.
I recommend that you try the low color setting and check the results. Most cameras and photo editing software now includes some version of auto color cast correction that works fairly well- experiment until you find a solution that is repeatable and the wood colors will be much more representative of the real wood.
