Looks pretty good for the first one. LIke you said, you learn with each one. Turn it a little closer on the ends and you've got a fine writing instrument there. I think you'll find that no finish will darken very quickly. A good friction finish like Shellawax or what ever else you might have laying around will extend the good looks of natural wood for a bit longer. 8)
