well, I got the idea from the Sorby disk we all seem to take a great interest in here while back, the part where he demonstrated the off center turning to make a three sided bowl. As for how I made it, It will take a lot of space to describe lets just say I turned it round then did the triangle then drill for the pivot pin before turning the tenons. After that I turned it as a normal box only most of my hollowing was actually done using a series of forstner drill bits using my tail stock chuck.
If there is interest in it I guess I could try and do a tutorial like CF did for his last challenge project. You all will have to let me know if this is what you want.
It is made from Mesquite, Jatoba, Moradillo, Olivewood, Maple, and Padouk. A simple brass machine screw acts as it's pivot point and I left the hole with the pin open in case for some reason something went wrong and the pin needed to be removed to fix it. I am not real happy with the finish on it so I will be redoing the finish on it before I send it unless you want it the way it is Bill
Great looking box, Philip. Neat idea for the lid attachment too. I guess I will need to review the Sorby CD and see how you did it. You all are going to force me into trying a segmented turning.
I would love to see a tutorial on how you did this. That three cornered shape seems impossible on a lathe. I love the wood selection and the pivoting lid too. Nice job Philip.
Looks like it sanded out well and finished up well as well. (That sure is a lot of well for such a shallow mind as mine.) I like what you did here, Phil. A very nice job indeed.
That's it Phil, nicely executed and intriguing ideas. Laminated/segmented, attached lid, off-center turning, and a nice finish...you've come a long way sir. Nice work.
