Walnut Derby, size 12"x5" by about 1/16" thick. This was made to be worn. It was commissioned by a person who wanted it to wear while judging horse show jumping. The pedistal is made of Dawn Redwood for the body, Holly eyes with ebony inserts. Mouth is Mahogany dyed red. All comments and critiques always welcome.
Too cool Gary, I didn't know you knew the hat process. It's a nice looking derby, with a gentle bend to the rim. The head guy is a fun touch, your client will be sure to enjoy this
Thanks Chris. This was my second hat and first full sized one. It took about a week to change the shape to oval, and curl the rim, in a hat clamp. Next time I will start with much greener wood, this was a little to dry. Definitely a fun project.
Very fine work, and mighty thin. The pedestal is pretty cool too. If the hat is actually going to be worn, how do you keep 1/16" wood from staining caused by sweat and skin oils?
Hi Gil. It was delivered and worn today. I took mesurements from front to back and side to side, averaged the two and added about a half inch. This was the turned inside mesurement. After a week in a hat clamp the shape was just about the shape of a head, and brim on the sides was curled up. For use I velcroed in a baseball cap with the brim cut off. This keeps the user from getting stained and the hat from getting all dirty inside. Eazy to take out and put in. (that extra half inch) Hat band was burned in and colored using prismacolor markers.
