This oak piece was made from a piece of firewood that would have kept us warm next winter. Oh well..........
Came out well considering limited experience. I need to research finishing techniques though.
This is a beautiful piece if you ask me, I love the shape and the way the curve flows from top to bottom, I think you nailed this one dead on! As far as a finish, I think a wipe on poly would look pretty good or you could put just some walnut oil on it and see how it looks, either way, once you bring out the color, its going to look really nice. Wizzy
That old piece of wood would have only kept you warn for a few minuts in the fireplace. Now it gets to keep your heart warm for years. A much better option and a far better use for the wood.
Technically, it shouldn't go here until the finish is applied but for oak, I've used lacquer, Danish oil, shellac, paste wax, and varnish. All have worked well and have their own strenghts and weaknesses. If it were me, I'd probably use eiter a varnish for a warm color change and high gloss or a gloss lacquer to keep the current colors.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
