Yep, it's a 7 ball. A friend asked if I painted it too. No paint on this at all. While in Phoenix, I had the honor of seeing Paul Porter turn one of these. Learned enough that I figured I could turn one myself. As you can see, the experiment was successful. Improvements will be made for the next one too. Box is hollowed and the lid is from the same ball. Finial is Box Elder. Wet sanded through the micromesh grits and polished with Hut High Gloss Polish for Plastics. Finial treated with EEE and Shellawax. Questions, Comments and Critiques welcome.
There is a place for both in this project so I'm using both. Thin parting tool plays a large role. Ci3m does a wonderful job of hollowing the box. I've been using a bowl gouge to hollow the foot and the underside of the lid, but the Ci3m would work as well. Like Jim said, I can't imagine hollowing with HSS tools. 8^)
Don, A Ci0 will work, but with the small radius of the ball, the lower edge of the shaft can cause problems. I rounded the lower edge back so it didn't rub. I did the same thing on my Ci3. I will try to post pictures over the weekend.
What Jim said. No reason it wouldn't work other than the bottom left edge of the shaft getting in the way. Round it a bit so that you have more clearance and you should be in business. I haven't done it yet, but my Ci3m is going to get this treatment the next time I go out to the shop. 8^)
