This is an aspen hollow form I made from the neighbor's tree that fell down in her driveway. I've also turned a larger face which she as to remember her tree.
This one is about five inches tall by about five inches wide. Finished with lacquer.
I took this piece to the local club meeting last night for show and tell. A lot of people liked it but said that they would have never identified it as being aspen. Other aspen I've turned looked a lot like this so I'm not sure what I should be seeing different. I think I was lucky that this one hadn't completely gone to junk. Usually when aspen rots and spalts, the wood becomes unusable.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
Love the colors of this wood. This is one of those pieces that I really wish I could hold in my hand and see it in person. The view I have is giving me the sense that something is just off. May not be that way at all. Just something in the pic is putting me off. Sanding and finish work look spot on. I'm betting that the turning of it is dead on as well. Good work. 8^)
I know what you mean. Sometimes I look at the picture and something doesn't look right. I had to pick it up today and turn it around. I think it is the camera angle and the shadows. The shadow from the shoulders makes it look like it bulges in the middle but it doesn't. I can't quite get my pinky into the hole but then I have stubby fingers to start with.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
We have a lot of aspen out here. They grow much better in the mountains than down in the city but people like to try. If they do take hold, the start sending up runners all over the yard.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
