Here's a bowl I just turned out of Yew. Yew seems to develop lots of checking even if you seal it good with end sealer. It doesn't much matter to me as it seems in my opinion to give the objects great character. I am really satisfied with how this bowl turned out...but I don't think I would be so satified without all the little lines running through it. It's about 5" in diameter. Sanded to 600g and finished with a couple coats of Briwax Friction Polish.
I'm with you on this one. Did you stabilize the checks with CA or some other glue? Finish looks good. You did a good job of not letting the curve stop. Even when you reversed the curve toward the top, it does not just stop. Good work sir. 8)
A fine looking bowl with a nice, smooth finish, Negeltu. I like way the curve reverses near the rim and flares out slightly. The Yew sure is a beautiful wood, checked or not. Does the checking/cracking occur during the cutting and sanding, or is it already present in the log?
That's a beauty! I agree, those cracks really add to it. It's beautiful wood too. I've seen several things turned from yew but never have known what a yew tree is. Guess I'll have to look that up.
This is really nice George. I think the cracks and checks add top this piece not detract from it. I recently did a piece of redbud that my mom gave me last year, being the procrastinator that I am, I never got around to sealing the end of the log. Needless to say what happened over a years time. Well I cut it in half and turned it anyway and I gave it to my mom and you would not believe how thrilled she was with it. She could not belive that something so ugly looking could be made into something so beautiful. I guess that is why I love this hobby/art form or whatever you want to call it, you can take ugly and make it beautiful.
