Cherry bowl, somewhere around 9" to 10" diameter. Rim is decorated with two grooves and burned lines. Sanded to 400. Finished with Mahoney's Utility Oil (Walnut oil) finish.
Glenn, that is a beauty of a bowl! I love Cherry wood, and you gave this piece of it a great new life. Those two friction burned lines go well with Cherry. This wood must be from an older tree then the Cherry I am using, because the heartwood is much thicker and the color is more mature.
I think the climate and latitude have a lot to with it Gil. I can't say that with any certainty though, it just seems to me that the more northern trees have it rougher year round and tend to be more heartier. Maybe some of you scientific types coudl weigh in on that.
According to the USDA, this tree was growing in zone 5a (-15 to -20 F annual min. temp). I don't know where you are in GA but you would be zone 7 or 8. The tree was a large cherry, about 25" at the base. The bottom 16' of this log are at a sawmill being converted into lumber. My dad is a cabinet maker by trade so he will find something to do with it. The tree was not in the greatest of health and much of the large branches overhung my parents cottage. As for the color, much of it probably has to do with the walnut oil based finish. I noticed the walnut oil darkens the wood slightly but I absolutely love the warm hue it gives to the cherry.
