A friends daughter saw my other goblet and wanted one for her birthday. After much questioning, she decided walnut was the wood she wanted. Would not have been my first choice, as the wood is a bit open grained, but here is it. Danish oiled and buffed. 4 1/2" by 2", with a captive ring.
I like it! Nice mellow shade of Walnut, and the tiered grooves at the top of the stem look good. I have never tried a captive ring, are they difficult?
Nice job Rick. One comment though, if you make the opening on the captive ring a little larger, it will hang on the stem rather than grab it so it becomes a additional element. Here it looks like it's a bead on the lower part of the stem. The larger the ring opening, the more off center it will hang for you.
Very nice goblett, Rick. I really like everything about it. The only thing I would change is the opening of the ring. I guess I'm going to have to take on my first attempt at gobletts soon. You have inspired me. 8)
Thanks for the comments, guys. Gil, captive rings aren't that hard to do, for me the hardest part was getting shape I wanted. I do have a two-pronged ring tool that helped me do some of the undercutting, but the final, break loose cut, was done with a skew point.
I agree the size of the opening was to small. So last night I took a scrap of 150G and wrapped it around the stem, then sat for an hour or so watching Tommy Lee goes to College (he came to UNL so it was required viewing ), twirling the ring around. It now 'hangs' much nicer. Still have a week to work on it, so I might do a bit more.
