I decided to try a 4 point axis (plus the center one) on this piece of figured maple. Kind of looks sun-like. The question is, do you folks think it looks too busy, or is it OK. Your thoughts are appreciated and thanks for looking, Don L.
Nice piece Don! I think it may look a bit busy, but not due to the pattern, I think more due to the fiddleback. It looks awesome, but maybe even more awesome on a simpler piece of wood. Of course then the dish part of it wouldn't look as cool.
OK I'm game if you are: I'd prefer it without the dye (I'm a woodie, sorry) ..Also I think it might look better if pattern were not so deep into the wood.I do not believe it to be too busy..Remember I'm the queen of eccentric and other bizarre turnings! The concept is great..it just needs tweaking...not much tweaking, either. IMHO
yeah the grooves are a bit deep for me also, but the dye is awesome! the only other thing, is i prefer an odd number of axis', 3,5,7... but remember thats coming from someone that has never tried one, lol. btw, what is the size?
Thanks folks! Forgot...the size is 9" diameter and finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed (carefully).
Yea, I could try making the cuts more shallow on the next one. I must say, the photo makes them look deeper than they are. Good comments. Oh well, back to tweaking. The next one is a pretty big one. Blue theme this time.
Thanks you guys, Don L.
Sweet. Grooves shallower and maybe not as heavy would be great. Maybe dye/stain the groove rather than the flat surface of the rim would be a nice change of pace. But the work you are doing is fantastic. I hope you are finding a market for some of this work. It really is getting very good. 8-)
Thanks Roger and Rev! I will try shallower grooves on the next new piece (another one has already been started). I'm changing up on the coloring of rings vs. grooves and we'll see how the next one looks. A previous one posted had darker grooves and I liked that look.
Thanks for the comments guys,
Don L.
