A five piece executive desk set (pen, pencil, letter opener, magnifier, and clock) turned from the wood harvested from the Thomas Boyd Live Oak. This tree was one of the oldest Live Oaks in Louisiana (250+ years), until it was uprooted during Hurricane Gustav in 2008. Each piece finished with FP and RW after sanding to 12,000 grit. Thanks guys. Here's the link to the story of the tree. http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/27980434.html
It was a very special tree to many in Baton Rouge. Many wedding and family reunion photographs were taken around it. It was the choice landscape feature for many paintings and other forms of art. If you know about Live Oaks, the branches get so heavy that they tend to start growing toward the ground and usually require bracing to keep them above to prevent rotting. Horticulturists speculate that the reason it fell is partly due to Katrina weakened it in 2005. These trees tend to have shallow root systems, as evidenced in the linked photograph.
