Another piece of my dunno (maybe poplar?) stock. Guess you'd call it a cup. Put a blank on the lathe and this is what was hiding in there. About 5" x 3". Added a tiny bit of dark stain to the wipe-on poly, just to give a hint of color, not terribly happy with that. You can see on the inside the dark speckles that was the result. Wouldn't have been quite so bad if it was more uniform, but the light sanding after the sanding sealer opened some areas to the stain more than others. Oh well, I like the shape, the sanding and surface came out good and no nicks or scratches that I could see.
I tell ya, the hurdle is high for "cup thingies" ..you jumped those hurdles and more :-) :-) Have never seen a better cup thingy in my entire life !!! :-) :-)(hope your sense of humor is in high gear this morning!) Have a great day

We're always so tough on ourselves. I like it and would be proud to call it my own.
I think it is a very nice piece. You did a great job. Adding stain to finish is an iffy proposition at best. If you want to stain, do it before you apply your finish unless you buy the stain/finish combinations. 8-)
