Not sure what type the wood is, but the finial is curly walnut. The shape isn't very imaginative, but for my 1st one I was more interested in the hollowing process and in making a lid that fits.
Hi Kathy: good to see another gal here. Welcome to WR..for a first, if the lid fits it's fantastic. Keep sending in pictures & show us your journey in woodturning
very nice box. good shape and proportions (at least to me). to many burn lines and inconsistent spacing, but all in all, a very nice box.

David, I'm not particularly happy with the burn lines either. Thought I would give it a try, the wire was a little to big and of course once I made the lines I couldn't take them out. lol
Kathy a tip for burning lines;
Use a sharp corner of a parting tool or whatever to just score a very thin groove. Its easier to get the spacing right and you can even measure them out. Place the wire into the groove and it will stay there and not skitter about. A higher speed burns faster too.
MUCH, MUCH, better than my first one, the lines are also a first try, good advice given here. The more pictures you put out there, the more help and critique you get, so keep postin. great first.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
