Interesting piece. A little bark, different colors between the sap wood and heart wood. I like it. Some of us might not like bark on our pieces but I've found that most of my family and friends love it for contrast and it also makes it look more natural and not like it has been machined, which we all know it has been.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
rank, love the contrasts in this piece, you made a great job of showing the wood off to its best. Love it.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
You're absolutely right, Don, the bottom should have been smaller - about the size of the collar. I always think it looks about right sitting sideways on the lathe - even though I know the mathematics are wrong - then it ends up being too big when I finish it and set it upright. You'd think I'd learn.
Nothing more to be said. The wood has loads of interest. Your work is good as well. Reducing the bottom would make it much more appealing to the eye. You'll get it. 8-)
very intersting wood. Frank I have the same problem eyeing the base diam. I just unthread the chuck and sit the vase/bowl up on my headstock and walk a bit away and eye it for size. It works for me
