Thanks all. It is the variability of form and internal structure that keep me addicted to this stuff. I now look at a chunk of wood and start picturing the shapes and colors hidden inside.

Thanks Leo. The inside is cut back under the bark for quite a way. I used a swan necked Sorby with the cutting bit and made sure it was as sharp as I could get it. Then I took very light cuts until I felt I'd gone as far as I could. The time spent slowing down and making the slightest of cuts was worth the time and effort. It also cuts down on the sanding time.
