This is an 11 inch by 8 inches very spalted maple and walnut hollow form.
This one I blew up 3 times. The wood was just to interesting to give up on. The 1st time was when my live center broke and it turned into a UFO. The 2nd I just got a bad catch while hollowing and the 3rd time was while is buffing it and it got away.
I have at least a whole bottle of CA in it stabilizing the soft spongy parts and holding all of the broken pieces together. However, I think the final results was worth all of the frustration and effort.
If anyone is interested I have photos of the pieces.
Something that sometimes works well on spongy spalted maple: soak for a couple of days in a 50/50 mixture of Elmer's Glue and water then let dry. In many cases it will firm up the spongy parts so they almost turn like "normal" wood - not always, but enough that I found it worth my while to try. I just hate to lose any of that beautiful spalted wood.
This is a beautiful piece. I can empathize with you on working with spalted wood. The biggest issue I have is with sanding. The punky side goes away before the solid side. Its worth it in the long run.
