This is from some improperly saved apricot that someone asked me to turn some pieces out of. They didn't seal the ends when they cut the tree down and just put the log in the garage for several years. I was asked to make some pieces for them and so far, this is the first try. The cracking ended up much worse than I thought and I spent a lot of time trying to hold it together with CA and epoxy. I tried to keep the bark on it but it peeled off during the sanding process.
The woman who asked me to do the turning said her cabinet making brother told her that she didn't seal it properly so it would probably be useless. I think I got it because he saw it as a waste of time. I actually like it but would like to feel comfortable about turning it thinner.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
I agree with not trying to go thinner, I like this though, IMHO. the cracks add something to it, when on others it may not.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
