Lime approximately 250mm x 100mm

This is my entry in the International woodworking exhibition turning competition that is to be held in Alexandra palace this weekend.

It nearly never got there as I am unable to go but am indebted to Margaret Garrard a turner from Yorkshire who is going to take it for me! My original entry was to have been a pierced piece but it had an accident at an early stage of its creation so I almost gave up on the idea of entering however I decided with only 4 days to spare to try and make something this is it!

Fantastic. I've tried to replicate this form on a smaller scale but have issues finishing the branches.

What are you using to cut the perforations and how do you sand them? I have an issue getting sand paper to fit in the little spots but still be effective.

Hi everyone and thanks for all your comments Robert I am currently using a electric handpiece that was supposed to be for beauticians to polish peoples nails. I used Klein Krause burrs from a web site www.shesto.com they are very good for intricate detail as for sanding I used abranet which I cut into fine wedges to get into the nooks and crannies. the piece was held in a Simon Hope carving jig which is like a normal carving jig but has a threaded rod which accepts my chuck off the lathe I did all the carving and finish then removed the spigot to finish hope that helps any other questions feel free!

I don't think it will win as I fear there is too much carving and texturing and not enough actual lathe work for the UK audience but you never know stranger things have happened. I just wanted to support the competition there has been a lot of talk lately over here about a lack of support for these kinds of thing saying that because of the percieved decline they may not happen in the future this year alone Scotland has lost its symposium through lack of support so I don't want to see any more go that way just entering is enough for me!
