This is my first attempt at a Southwest style hollow form. It is turned from a pine fireplace mantle. I had a longer lip on it but due to micro cracks that I couldn't see, it kept chipping off while I was hollowing it out. It is rather large at 10" wide by 6" tall. The finish is lacquer.
I gotta get my hands on some pine also. Been looking around here...LOTS of pine, but no one's cutting them down. Nice finish & shape. I like it!

Thanks guys. It isn't really that much fun to turn but if you can do it, the grain looks spectacular. The big keys are very sharp tools and very sharp sandpaper or you'll have very bad tear out in the summer wood and you'll end up with huge valleys in the summer wood from sanding.
If you can pull it off, I love the grain.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
