This is another piece from the pine fireplace mantle I was given to play with. It is about 8" wide by 5" tall. The inside of the rim also turns under a bit. I thought I'd try ebonizing and it worked OK but not as dark as I might have liked. Finished with several coats of clear lacquer.
I'd tried some test pieces of the wood that came out darker but using it over tannin soaked wood didn't make much difference. This piece was given to the family that gave me the mantle along with a spatula made from the mantle wood as well.
Lots of very fresh and sharp sandpaper. Oh and I end up spending more time sanding than turning. I don't too much care for sanding but it was a good time killer while I was boiling some green cedar blanks that I turned earlier in the day.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
Nice work. I love chocky donuts... BTW. dying it has brought the grain out lovely. Gives my ideas for pine.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
