A Sycamore bowl rough turned last year at the Desert Woodturning Roundup by Craig Jackson. I took it, dried it, final turned it, and put flames on it and burned the other areas as a club challenge and after watching a Molly Winton demo.
Oh yeah, there is actually some blue at the bottom, representing the hot part of the flame, but it didn't show up well. Lesson learned. I'm not a huge fan of enhancements, but this was fun to try. Next time, it needs to be on a taller vessel. It doesn't show up well unless you lift the piece up.
No, the flames are water based analine dyes. Blue on the bottom, then red, orange, and yellow. Between colors, I wet sanded with 600 to blend them and get rid of any hard lines.
I also like the bowl AND the flames! I just got for Christmas some water base analine dyes. I'd like to try something of this type. Thanks for the inspiration!
