These are four of the ten and counting goblets I'm making to hand out at this years Swift Solo/MPS North American Championships. The wood is cedar. Turned from 4X4s I picked up from the local hardware. Some see fencing, I see boats, bowls, and goblets. :D Not the easiest wood to turn because of the tear out but I love the smell of cedar and it matched my boat.
The are between 9 and 10 inches high and 3 to 3 1/2 inches wide. The graphic is pyrography.
Darker stems are ebonized. I tried a couple just to see how it looked. The problem is that the mixture soaked up through the end grain and didn't leave a crisp edge.
I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not. I do like the contrast but I'm not sure if the bleeding at the end grain is worth it.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
Minwax's Polycrylic. It is an acrylic clear coat that you can brush or wipe on. I'd used the satin version on a table of my mothers years ago and it held up well. With the boss woman complaining about the smell of Verathanes and varnishes, I decided to give it a try again.
Live long, love lots, and turn fast.
