I tested the limits of my lathe with this 17 inch diameter platter. The Oak crotch developed a stress crack as soon as I started roughing it out, so I marked the faceplate position carefully then removed it. In the same area as the faceplate had been, I screwed on a piece of MDF about 18" square then raised the radial arm saw to cut the Oak but not the MDF, cut out the cracked area and glued in the Mahogany accent stripe. Then remounted the face plate and finished turning. The pores of the Oak have been filled with black tinted pore filler, then 8 coats of Minwax antique oil finish.
