I made these last night for 3 girls I used to work with and had lunch with today. Back two are from one Elm blank, front two are from one Sycamore blank. Ave size 5" x 1.5"
I took E.Buds advice and kept the finials simple. Finial wood supplied by Chuck (don't know what it is) The shiny ring in the front left bowl is a reflection, not a pressure ring. Sanding sealer and wax finish on all.
These are very nice Brendan, Chuck sent you some wood as well as some of his love eh. Nice work (y)(y)
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
Thanks guys, your comments are very much appreciated.
Interestingly, I made the two fat bowls first and liked them but decided to make a different style to see which got the best reception from the girls. They all liked the fat ones. One girl excused herself before the bowls were divided up and, while she was away for a moment, the other two girls nabbed the fat bowls. By way of consolation I gave the girl who lost out the plain matching bowl as well. The old rule - never go to the wash room during a meeting still applies. LOL
I love making these but still haven't used the blanks you sent me because I'm scared of ruining them but after a bit more practice I'll use them. I used a scraper to blend the curves on the first few bowls I made but I only used bowl gouges on these ones and they worked out well. If you try the rounded over rim it can be done with a scraper but I find I get a better cut with a bowl gouge on it's side like a shear scraper.
