How did you do that........the oval bit I mean.

Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.

My guess would be that he turned it as a narrow bowl and then cut it in half vertically and carefully reglued at 90 degrees.

you would be correct, twice! i rough turned it into a narrow open vase shape, then cut it on the bandsaw. afterwards i put in a piece of walnut and glued it back together again. then i turned it to final shape, and sanded. then i cut it again and glued the two halves together horizontally.
