This is my attempt to copy the similar Osage Orange bowl that Philip turned. I really liked this concept and plan to do some more. Thanks for the idea Philip. This one is from an 8" log of Gambel Oak, 6" wide, 3" tall. Finished with semi-gloss Deft.
Very pretty piece of wood, Curt. Looks like you've done a fine job of turning an interesting style. These pieces always look to me like they are pulling themselves out of the slab. Very cool. 8)
I really like what you have created here, Curt. The finish looks very smooth, and the grain/colors look great. Did you bandsaw a plank to start with, or just mount the whole small log between centers. Is the bottom a small foot or does the bowl continue through the square?
Gil, it was turned from a short piece of the log. The bowl continues through the plank. There's about 2" of bowl under the plank that the picture doesn't show. I just drilled a hole in the log and screwed it on to the big wood worm screw that comes with the talon chuck and held it with the tailstock. Turned and finish sanded the bottom with a tenon. Turned it around and held the tenon in the chuck and turned and finished the top. Finished the foot using the donut chuck.
Thanks Curt. My donut chuck is about the most useful tool I have ever made.
Maybe it is the background color, but it sure does not 'look' like the square is elevated two inches. When I look down into the bowl, I can see the depth you are describing.
