If you were to try to repeat this and make the stem thin the whole way between the bowl and the base you would have a very elegant piece because the bowl on this is very well shaped. Lids usually have one tier or finial which you could try on another piece for comparison. Your basic goblet structure is fine but, like all of us starting out, you just need to sacrifice wood instead of trying to maximise every piece. However, you need to make these pieces to learn technique and satisfy your own curiosity. It's your piece of wood and you are free to do whatever you wish with it. keep them coming please.
Thanks again Brendon.....all comments help, especially the constructive ones. I see what you mean on all 3 items.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
Brendon,
I've just had a good look at the Gallery of other turners on this site and I may be too embarrassed to add any more photoes.....there's some fantastic work out there... at least I now know what to aspire to...:d

No, no, don't do that. You are pretty isolated so you don't have the luxury of being able to bounce ideas and designs of local turners. If you put your work up here someone might spot a good design to develop or maybe something that is spoiling an otherwise good piece.
If you are having a mid-turning crisis and take a shot of the piece on the lathe (or off) then posting it in the forums is a good idea because there seems to be more traffic there so a better chance of getting some help.
Recently I read a comment about self-criticism where someone said "most turners I know are only happy with their work for about half an hour". That is very true, it seems like we are always striving to improve and sometimes an issue that is driving us mad can be resolved quite easily because other people have been there already. Be assured, we have all had the same problems so we are eager to share our solutions to help others avoid some of the mistakes we made.
Another point is, no matter how poor you might think a piece is there can be elements that inspire someone to run with your idea or part of it so we all win - you get advice, we get ideas.
And the bottom line is...people like helping other people.
Thanks Brendan for the encouragement and advice, it makes me feel beter to know you are all out there with help. I will post some more rubbish very soon. Thanks again for t
