Leo, tell us more about these pieces. Size, finish, sanding protocol, what you learned, troubles you had, anything special about the wood, all help us know more about you and what you were doing or going for. 8-)
HiRev. Doug, thank you for the interest and comment.
The wood is from a pepper tree here in lanzarote that came with the lathe when a friend sold it to me, it( the wood ) had been sat outside in the sun for about 5 years. The Volcano is about 6" wide and started off as a natural edged bowl, but as I had only just started turning, my gouges were very un-sharp and the wood very hard. While I was struggling to get a Bowl shape I just started to see it as a Volcano shape, possibly due to being on a Volcanic Island with hundreds of Volcanoes on it. I sanded it to death due to the tool problem and used a mixture of Olive oil, Paint thinners and Furnature restorer to finish it. Sorry for the long reply, but being a newbie Turner I realy do appreciate the interest of others and their comments help enormously.
Ruining lots of good wood to get a few average bits.
