This is my first vase (or anything) made from a solid piece of wood. I've got no idea what kind of wood this is but sure would like to know. Size is approx. 5" tall by 4.5" wide.
Not bad, I really like the way you left the bark on the top, much wider than a NE form, but it looks pretty cool with the two openings at the top also. As far as what kind of wood it is, I'd have to call it idontnowood, would be my guess... sorry I don't have a clue either.Wizzy
very nice, great grain flow and the bark adds to it. needs a little more work on the inside, you are leaving tool marks. otherwise, great piece.

Just a wild guess, but in some ways it looks like it could be cherry. I wouldn't bet the farm on it though. Your design on this one is well done. Nice flowing curve from bottom to the bark rim. You inclusion of the bark goes well with the voids that developed. Mike has a really good suggestion for you too. The inside is important on these open forms like this. You can't leave heavy tool marks like that. Work on those and you'll have an excellent piece. Good work for one of your early pieces. One to be proud of for sure. 8-)
Thanks gentlemen, much appreciated. My dad is with you Mike except he called it sh*twood lol! I was kind of thinking cherry myself and it turned real hard, my tools were dulling quickly! I really wanted to get rid of those heavy marks myself on the inside but I just couldn't seem to ride the scraper in there without it catching. I figured with all the cracks that go up and down the sides I didn't want to push my luck. What do you guys think would be the best tool for cleaning up the inside?
Very nice for the first one. You did a good job. To remove the toolmarks, you could try a scraping cut using the bowl gouge. That's what I do with the inside of bowls sometimes to help smooth it out.
