This end grain plate was turned green knowing that it would crack. This wood seems to crack almost as fast as you can carry it in from cutting it! I turned it immediately, it's a very hard wood, dulls tools very quickly even green. It was allowed to dry (and crack)for about a month till the weight stabilized. Then I filled the cracks with epoxy mixed with contrasting colour earth pigment. Then returned sanded and finished with 2 coats Minwax antique oil, allowed to cure for a week then 3 coats of Target coatings EM2000WVX for a hard glossy food safe finish.
A friend said he had just finished limbing a large tree, did I want any of the wood? When I first saw this piece of wood, it was chainsaw shaped into a disc and my mind pictured the plate. I turned it within hours, and tried an LDD soak, but it still cracked. It sat around the shop because I really liked the grain. Then thought of a way to "save" it.
