This vase shaped Elm HF is 8”X5.25 and was taken from a halved log. Has a bit of pith exposed at the outside edge with some spalting present. 3 coats of DO. I’m a bit undecided as to a buffed DO finish or a gloss poly finish? As always critiques or comments are always welcome. I’m not real happy with the form. Not sure if I just missed the curve or if the mouth is a bit out-of-wack but something just doesn’t feel right…Bill…
Bill, I think the figure in the wood is affecting the perception of the shape. The curve on the right side looks perfect but on the left side it looks like it is too thick about 1/3 of the way up. I bet if you rotated the piece 90 degree and took another shot the curve on both sides might look the same.
Nothing like being hard on yourself. I'm sure there are many others out there that like me are saying, "Wish I could do that." Buffed DO gets my vote.

I'm not sure what you are seeing. The curve looks to be pretty nice to me. You may have something on the mouth though. Looks just a tad tall and maybe a touch on the large side. However, it is nothing to worry about. I think it is a lovely piece just the way it is. As to finish, I think since this one has so much spalting and the like that I would add another 2-3 coats of DO and then after it cures go to it with all 3 buffing compounds. Would think it would be beautiful that way. 8-)
Bill, I think the form is spot on. I do agree with Rev though. The mouth could be a little smaller.I'm sure however you finish it, it will be very nice.
Bill I believe this form is great. Much more elegant than the "superman" emblem type. However I also think you would be surprised at how broad the shoulders would look if you took off some of the collar you have on this piece. Not only taking off dia. but height as well. This all depends on the size of the entry hole, but worth a shot, as this piece of wood deserves the best you have to offer.
2 cents... take it or leave it.
