I've had this material in the shop for several years and finally got around to turning somthing from it.
Materials: black/white color ply and ebony for the top and base.
Dimensions: 4-1/2t X 5-1/2d
Finish: waterbase poly-acrylic and kiwi shoe polish
Very nice!
I like the form, color and contrast of this piece.
I need to ask about the kiwi shoe polish, what made you think of using it?

Bill, you should see it spinning on the lathe!
Mark, I saw a video where Bonnie Kline used it on her turnings, plus it's the only thing I had at the time. Works great!
Wasn't that long ago that Kiwi Clear and Ren was basically the same. I've been told that Kiwi has recently changed their formula. Still good stuff, just not the same kind of stuff as the much more expensive Ren Wax.
Mark, maybe you can help me out here. I kind of subscribe to the Wally Dickerman philosophy of turning. Is it the pic or does this piece flatten out just above the initial curve at the foot? In the pic I'm seeing a nice curve and then a flat that reaches all the way up to the ridge. My preference is a constant curve, from foot to rim. Changes in direction are fine and good and I'm not advocating for one single curve, only that all surfaces be a curve. I think I'm being rather picky here, but in my opinion this is a near museum quality piece. If the "flat" I'm seeing is an optical illusion, then by all means I want to praise it as such. (My goodness I sound like Simon Cowell) 8-)
disregard my curve question. I've since watched the video and see what you're doing. Just a different school of thought on the curve. You stack construction is wonderful. Your imagination with tool making is great too. What a gift you have. 8-)
Rev.Doug, My goal was to get a constant curve on the sides but, I had to return the bottom because this piece came off the lathe, spun on the bed and then bounced of the wall behind me!The bottom was chewed up pretty bad and with the wall being very thin at this point, I could not get the constant curve I wanted .The video probably explains the process better than I could here.
Thanks for the nice comments!
Mark
David, color ply is a material made from multiple layers of colored wood veneer that are laminated together under high pressure in an interlocking pattern.
It comes in several colors and can be purchaced from Craft Supplies USA and Woodcraft Supply.
Thanks!Mark
