Being a fan of Bill Grumbine, when I saw pictorial of him making one of these, I had to try. Turned from a half log of crabapple (got a great score on a tree), 8x5x2", finished with DO. I could have made the bowl bigger.
See that little pin hole at about 4:00? Something lives in there. I've brushed off bug dust twice since I finished the piece. Anything I can drop in the hole to nullify it? CA maybe?
Put a drop or two of CA down there, should fix it right up. Love the wood you used, but your right about the bowl maybe could have been a bit bigger. Still nice looking piece, aren't winged vessels fun to do? I still have a piece of Crabapple I got from Gil I really need to do something with.
It looks real nice, and you did a very good job keepng the upper and lower bowl profiles the same. The CrabApple wood has beautiful colors.
I had a similar bug problem, and ended up nuking it a few times (until the dust piles stopped). I think that CA would be a good first idea.
Nice work Rick. The bowl size is fine, but instead I would thin the wings down a bit to make it look bigger. Offsetting the bowl will also have a huge affect.
Hey Rick so how many times did you knock a knuckle or finger? I bruised my thumb on my first one. Another design thought is to leave off the foot so the piece sits naturally. Check out my piece for the first challenge to see one offset and no foot, I think you'd like the challenge.
Just once that I recall (vividly). No bruise, but a small scrape. Did just as much damage trying to sand the thing. You can get just so far out from the center, then you hit the wood/no wood cycle. Finished sanding by hand after that
I remember that piece and flashed on it immediately when you mentioned offset. I'll check the footless part.
That's why I power sand/hand sand anything out of the solid wood area now. The transition from no wood to wood is rough on the fingers even if you don't knock them!
