This is another bit of 30 yr old firewood. It was the hardest wood I ever turned and took me about 12 hours to get to here. It looks like there are tool marks in the pic but that's my poor photography skills. The surface is like glass, that's where all the work went. 5" x 2.25", sanding sealer and wax.
Your dunno wood looks a lot like ambrosia'd hard rock maple. If you were on this side of the pond I would be pretty sure of it. Since you're not here I'm not positive, but it sure does look like it. Great firewood, but great for so much more as you are showing us. Good work. 8-)
Rev Doug, we think it might be sycamore or elm but the jury is still out. We don't have maple here (I think). We have about 2500 species of trees here but I've never seen one (a maple, that is).
Bill, the piece is side grain hollowed from the inside. I was quite surprised when I saw the grain pattern. I wonder would any side grain hollowed like that be so symmetrical? I was tempted to go a little deeper to see if the grain centered but I would have been into the foot and I was scared to push my luck.
