These two pieces were turned from the same short log. Turned away all the white sapwood to get a totally red piece. Both are about 7 X 5.5 and finished with gloss wipe on poly. I did a final finish coat with minwax spray poly just to try it out. After the last coat and some drying time I wet sanded the whole piece with 1200 black sandpaper then 3 wheel buffed. Feels sooo good in the hands...Bill..
Boxx: The finish is a lot more time consuming than the turning and hollowing combined. Put on one coat a days. These were 5 days applying the finish. Then they sit for about a week getting fully cured. On to the buffer and done...Bill..
I love them as well. Very nice work. From what you are saying I bet you're also right about how they feel in the hand. They have to feel good. So cool. I hate to turn cedar because of its tendency to crack and split. But, I love the look of it when it does hold together. These are wonderful. 8-)
HOLY MAN! I just get excited when I see the final finish on ALL of your work. Way to go...anything you can share to tell us how you got that finish would be great...maybe a small tutorioal in the message section? I would personally love to see that.
