This is from some wood Phillip traded me for some myrtle. I haven't put a finish on it yet. I've never turned cedar before and have to say that the color is amazing. Smells like a gerby cage too. :-D lol
If had known it was this nice a piece of wood I would have kept it. Just kidding, I am glad you liked it and by the way, nice bowl. I love the grain pattern.
Ain't it fun. Cedar can be lots of fun to go around the cracks, inclusions, outer boundries, etc. I was turning some a week and a half ago and could hear the balace of the log cracking everytime I stopped for something. You done good on this one. You may want to experiment with your finish on a scrap piece. Cedar can do some funny things when finish is applied, at lease in my experience.
That's a really nice looking bowl. I love the smell of the cedar too. A while back I made a bunch of those potpourri dishes with the pewter lids and put the shavings in them. Makes the house smell like a gerby cage too, minus the added extras the gerbils add to the mix.
If you don't want to darken the color try using a water based finish like polycrylic. it provides a nice finish, easy to apply, dries quickly and doesn't cause a darkening or ambering effect on light colored wood.
