A great little gem. You really did a nice job of this. Was the blank already stabilized or did you stabilize it? Or did you turn it without stabilizing it? Also curious about your finish. Looks great regardless. 8-)
I never saw this wood before, but I really like the grain pattern and color. Very nice job on the box. I like ths shape and it looks like a great fit on the lid.
Hey guys, thanks for the nice comments. I don't know if you can say there is a grain to this stuff. The light and dark areas are more like tubes. I didn't do anything to stabilize it and this leads to some of the tubes separating from others. I don't know if it qualifies as tearout as it doesn't look like tearout. It just looks like a piece is missing. I am debating with myself whether this is good or bad and if I should try superglueing before taking the last cuts. Left alone this stuff is somewhat brittle and dusty. I have only turned this end grain so following normal spindle turning techniques works well as long as the tools are sharp. If you Guys have any thoughts on stabilizing or not, let me know.
I would think that some kind of stabilization would benefit this stuff. One of my favorite pens was turned out of coconut, basically the same thing. the big issue I had with it was the shredding of the tubes just as I was done. Other than that issue, I love the stuff and how it looks in the hand. Great job, Keith. 8-)
