This is Box Elder burl with a finial and base made from Cocobolo. The grain and color in the Cocobolo clashed with the grain in the Box Elder so I hit it with some black dye. You can still see a little of the grain but only if you look close. It's 10" tall, 4" dia, lacquered.
I hate the idea of dying cocobolo, but understand what/why you did it. Love the piece. One question for you. Where did the lid come from? Was it off the bottom of the burl? Just curious. 8-)
It has all been said, but I wanted to let you know I really like the piece as well. The contrast of the dyed base and finial between the box elder burl really set it off.
Thanks everyone!
Doug, yes, the lid is a piece off the bottom of the burl. I know what you mean about dying the cocobolo. I thought it looked pretty good without the dye and I wish I had taken a picture to compare. But my wife said it was too "busy" and suggested the dye, and it turned out looking good that way too.
You see, this is another example of why I need to live until I'm about 167 when I might get this good because I just keep seeing all these beautiful pieces here then I panic that I might die when I'm only 162 and never reach this sort of perfection.
