Maple Burl hollow form with ebony collar. 4 1/4" tall x 4" diameter, 1/8" wall thickness. Opening is 1/2". Sanded to 1000, buffed and 3 coats of Antique oil.
Thanks Rev. The 1/2" opening is what I hollowed through, the collar fits into that with a small lip to keep it from falling in. The opening in the ebony collar is about 1/4".
Sure looks great Chris, and you just answered my next question about the opening. Now all I need to do is decide on what hollowing tools to buy or make. These hollowing tools must be very small to be able to work thru a ?? hole. Do you use CA glue or a regular wood glue to secure the collar to the main body?
Thanks Gil. My recommendation would be to make the tools. They are so simple, I wish I had made my own. The shafts are 3/8" drill rod. One has a hole drilling straight into the end, the other has a hole drilled into the side, right near the end at about a 45 degree angle. Take 2 1/4" HSS bits, ground one end round and glue it into the hole with medium CA glue, lots of glue. Then with about 3/8"-1/2" of the bit sticking out of the tool shaft, grind the bits like a round nose scraper. Make a handle long enough to allow you some leaverage if necessary and you're set. I can send a photo of mine if you want.
The collar is attached with 2 stage 5 minute epoxy. CA is too brittle and any movement could crack the ebony collar. Epoxy will allow a bit more movement.
Thanks, please do, you have my email address. It is dsl, so size is not a problem. Yes epoxy does allow more flexing. Why do you use CA to set the bits, other than not enough meat left for set screws?
It actually works very well to hold the bits and it leaves the tool shaft clean of edges so when you are working with a very small opening a set screw opening could catch. The CA comes apart under a torch, so the bits are very easy to replace.
