A piece I recently finished from a half-log. Not my first winged bowl, but the first where I incorporated the form of the log section. The bowl sits on a small foot and is about 8" diameter (not including the wings) and about 4" tall.
The mesquite was still green and turned quite well. I basically went straight through the turning-to-finishing process in two sessions. The wood is surprisingly stable and moved very little after turning.
I break the ice here. I LOVE IT! These have become one of my favorite designs. The idea of the bowl "stretching out of the log" is one of those wonders that just draws me and my eye. One thing I've noticed is that these pieces, whether natural log or or even square, creates lots of discussion and wonder in people's minds. It's like they can sort of understand a round bowl. But, a round bowl within a square or natural shape just does not compute. Most of the time it you can get it in their hands they'll buy it. 8-)
I have recently gotten into doing these. I don't have one finished yet but i enjoy these a TON! Nice work. The mesquite looks awesome. The elevated rim of the bowl is a nice touch. Your proportion seems right on.
You'll find mesquite does not move much if at all even when green. I love working with it, I just wished I could get more of it more often. I too love these type bowls and have done several myself, they are a challenge....Hmmm that give me an idea...
