I started with a 5 in. square cube. Final dimensions are 6 1/4 W X 4 1/4 H X 3/16 thick. Finish is 6 coats Danish Oil hand buffed with Micromesh. I've turned this shape before but added the following new twists. 1) The wood was very green. I turned it thin in hopes it would warp and I would get an interesting shape. It only warped a little on one side. 2) The wood is sort of a mystery wood. Best I can tell it may be Hackberry, but I'm not sure. 3) The 3rd design challenge was that as it dried it cracked on the back side where I had to leave the pith. I decided to embelish the cracks rather than fill them. This piece definitely has a ying and a yang (Good / Bad) aspect about it. The front is very light with nice grain patterns. The back around the pith is much darker. I hope the recipient is able to identify the wood.
Picture a cube standing on one corner. The top one got lost when you hollow it out, and the bottom one and the other 3 went away when you round the bottom.
